An integrated approach based on modular construction can shorten construction times for medical spaces, says Medexs. The specialist in the construction of classified medical spaces acts as a one-stop-shop for design and execution and can provide customized solutions. As a result, time, cost and quality are optimally managed, according to CEO Jos Lans. "We provide each proposal with scientific justification with a practical approach. A good construction team need not be more expensive; medical expertise is always essential."
Lans, who in addition to his work as CEO in 2024 is completing doctoral research at TU Delft, involving both scientists and medical specialists, adds, "Medexs works on the basis of participatory design with expertise input from medical professionals and can already make a price after a preliminary design prepared by consultants. We act entirely as a general contractor, preferably in a construction team context, so that as much expertise as possible is at the table early on. Medexs is one of the few parties that combines architectural, engineering and clinical knowledge, but we all need each other in construction for acute care."
"Medical specialists, consulting firms, architects, modular builders and other executing parties are increasingly complementing each other in chain collaboration," Lans continued. "It is not a question of who is the boss. We see in recent years that more and more design is based on integrality and actual lifespan. We mainly realize specialized spaces with an average lifespan of 15-20 years. ORs and clean rooms are high-tech environments that anno 2024 cannot remain structurally unchanged beyond the aforementioned time period, and modular construction provides adequate opportunities for future modifications. You can't always foresee those."
Hospitals and design parties are becoming increasingly convinced of this approach, says Lans. "This means that we deliver a fully functional, functioning, classified medical building or building component turnkey and to the highest standards, flexible enough to be adapted during its lifetime to meet evolving requirements and regulations. In addition, as a sister company of Daiwa House, we are suppliers of walls and wall systems, floors, ceilings for interior finishing projects, blow-in and air supply systems. We control the entire chain with established partners and guarantee the client price stability."
When all these aspects are covered, in Medexs' philosophy, the hospital has the operability that is desired, with the classifications that are desired and flexibility for the future. "And this is precisely why medical expertise is essential. We understand the user in all his issues, even where help is needed. For example, in the choice of an air treatment system or energy reduction in the ORs. We can substantiate this scientifically. We always make the best choices in the interest of the client and medical professionals, who often only go through a new-build process once in their careers. We do it daily and over and over again," Lans concludes.
