The penitentiary in Scheveningen has expanded to include a Judicial Center for Somatic Care. This is both a penitentiary and a center for care treatment and nursing. The extremely complex program took shape efficiently on 3,300 square meters: cepezed and cepezedinterieur designed a daylight-rich, healing environment with soft colors, plenty of wood and a view of the greenery through large, lattice-free windows. The design was made for the Government Property Agency on behalf of consortium dpcp (du Prie and cepezedprojects).
Because of its proximity to two Natura2000 areas, the care center was built low on nitrogen. The goal of a maximum deposition of 0.005 mol N/ha/year was guiding the common choices from the outset. Low-nitrogen construction starts with the design: the use of electric transport and construction equipment requires manageable and lightweight prefabricated elements. In addition to the nitrogen ambition, the applied kit of parts construction is also sustainable because it is reusable and because the large amount of wooden precast elements reduces CO2 emissions.
The Justice Center for Somatic Care was recently inaugurated, after a two-year construction period. Despite the challenges - for example, insufficient electrical equipment proved to be available - the parties involved stuck to the set nitrogen ambition so that it was achieved. Thus, in Scheveningen, within a highly secure environment and with a minimum of inconvenience, it was possible to realize an institution that is already considered an example of "humane housing" by the Judicial Institutions Department.
