In hospital VieCuri, 17-year-old Lara Özdemir was presented with the appreciation award 'the Venlo Pluim' on Wednesday, November 20. She received the award from the hands of Mayor Scholten and children's mayor Merel. It was a big surprise for her. It is the first time that the Venlo Pluim is awarded.
Lara has been initiating the action to make get well cards for patients admitted to VieCuri since 2023. She not only writes cards herself but also involves organizations and agencies. In this way, she has inspired many others to participate. Various media have already paid attention to her initiative, including the Youth News.
IJsbrand Schouten is chairman of the board of VieCuri and has nothing but praise for the action: "Lara's initiative puts a smile on the face of many people. Obviously and first and foremost with our patients. Getting a personal card from someone you don't know is so special! A real boost when you're sick. The volunteers at VieCuri enjoy handing out the cards and it leads to great conversations. So we are incredibly proud of this initiative. The award is more than deserved!"
Mayor Scholten presented the award on behalf of the Municipality of Venlo: "Especially when you are sick and struggling, a sign of attention and compassion is invaluable. Lara is an example for all of us. She shows that you can make a world of difference with sincere attention and small gestures."
The Venlo Pluim is awarded to young people aged six to seventeen who selflessly contribute to a more beautiful and better Venlo. An appreciation expressed by the Venlo community. This award was presented on the International Day of the Rights of the Child.
