Floors in hospitals and care centers are heavily used, and maintaining a clean and safe environment is essential. However, traditional maintenance of resilient floors is time-consuming and environmentally damaging. Bona, a Swedish company with more than 100 years of experience in floor maintenance, now introduces a sustainable alternative: the Bona Resilient System. This system is cost-saving and extends the life of the floor.
Bona has traditionally specialized in wood floor maintenance and installation. Since 2015, the company has expanded its expertise to elastic floors. Technical advisor Nico Booster explains: "In healthcare, elastic floors, such as linoleum, are mainly used. When we looked into the maintenance of these floors, we noticed how labor-intensive and stressful it usually is. Three to four times a year the floors are polymer coated, and during major maintenance, the floors are completely stripped using lots of water and chemicals. These substances then disappear into the sewer, which is not yet prohibited, but certainly undesirable."
In the search for a more sustainable and efficient maintenance method, Bona developed the Bona Resilient System, which allows healthcare facilities to reduce the maintenance of their floors to once every five to seven years. "This system therefore pays for itself quickly," Booster said. The process begins with mechanically stripping the floor without harmful alkaline substances, followed by sanding the floor smooth. After applying a primer, three finishing options are available:
- The floor is finished with a transparent protective coating.
- The floor receives a color coating (various colors possible) and is then finished with a transparent protective coating.
- The floor is coated with a color layer (various colors possible), decorative flakes and a transparent protective coating.
All of these options provide a hard-wearing finish that is at least ten times stronger than traditional polymers, giving the floor long-lasting beauty.
One of the biggest benefits of the Bona Resilient System is a significant reduction in downtime. "This is a big advantage for healthcare, where operating rooms cannot be closed for long periods of time. In nursing rooms and corridors, the inconvenience is also reduced because maintenance takes place in two days instead of two weeks."
In addition, the Bona Resilient System offers design flexibility. "We can change the color of the floor and add a protective coating or decorative flakes," Booster explains. "This makes the system particularly attractive for healthcare facilities that want to refresh their rooms without completely replacing the floor."
Meanwhile, Bona has received Green Deal certification for the Healthcare category as a recognized sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative to alkaline stripping and polymers. Still, according to Booster, awareness of the Bona Resilient System within the healthcare sector has yet to grow. "Facility managers in the healthcare sector are often unaware of the new possibilities. We would like to change that! We want to let them know that the benefits of our system are worthwhile. Not only does the floor look better and stay nice longer, but the frequency of maintenance is also significantly reduced, from three times a year to once every five to seven years."
The Bona Resilient System makes it possible to renovate the floor with new colors and decorative elements, without completely replacing the floor. This makes the system an attractive option for healthcare facilities looking to modernize their rooms. "We have developed a very distinct color line in cooperation with a German color specialist," shares Booster. "Think natural and earth tones that have a calming effect, which is especially important in healthcare facilities and schools. These colors contribute to the recovery or well-being of the users."
