Timeless and accessible design for Spijkenisse Medical Center

When bringing interior experiences to hospitals, the wishes of the users are the starting point for Lensen. Miranda Janssen, designer of deStudio by Lensen: "We are convinced that an interior affects people's emotional experience and well-being." By focusing on the users, the total project designer strives to create an environment that is not only functional, but also meets the needs and preferences of the people who stay, work or recover there. 

In hospitals, Lensen focuses on functional efficiency, patient-friendliness and flexibility and leads by distinctive thinking and action. Designing projects within the cure requires a thoughtful approach that positively impacts the experience of patients, staff and visitors. The design process integrates regulations, standards and values to ensure that projects meet the highest standards of quality and safety. This vision and an eye for people make the difference at the newly redesigned Spijkenisse Medical Center.

The small scale and regional character of Spijkenisse Medical Center allows employees to really make a difference for their patients. With the cooperation motto "care close by if possible, care further away if necessary" as a starting point, the organization - in close cooperation with the Van Weel-Bethesda Hospital and the Maasstad Hospital - offers medical specialist basic care in a safe and hospitable environment. Spijkenisse MC's Program of Requirements combined with Lensen's knowledge and expertise resulted in a timeless and accessible interior design. 

For Spijkenisse MC, experiencing comfort in an atmospheric space that functions optimally is paramount. Each design carries the DNA of the users so that everyone can recognize themselves in the interior and be themselves. Janssen: "The line that was initiated three years ago is solid, timeless in style and widely supported by the hospital's atmosphere and interior design committee. The ambience is accessible and the hospital's DNA is incorporated in the colors, visuals and furniture. Because Spijkenisse is located under the smoke of Rotterdam, emphasis has been placed on an urban vibe. This is reflected in the four themes of Architecture, Water, Nature and Bridges. Each theme has its own distinctive color - green, blue or terra - and is translated with tough, robust materials such as wood, leather and metal. The furniture is designed uniformly throughout the hospital so that it is easily interchangeable and fits each theme. This does not mean it is all the same tables and chairs. Instead, a dynamic and varied seating landscape has been created with different chairs, benches and stools. In the new restaurant that was recently completed, we see everything - existing and new - coinciding nicely."

That the new concept is enthusiastically received by employees, patients and visitors of Spijkenisse MC can be readily confirmed by Mariëtte Bouman, team leader Hospitality at Spijkenisse MC. "The whole forms an attractive, solid, quality and functional unit in which experience is central. The new restaurant is full every day, which used to be different. It has become a real meeting place where people can eat, drink, relax or work. We have received nothing but positive feedback." Janssen concurs: "When we are on site, you notice people's enthusiasm: everyone is happy to think and help."

Interior design at Lensen goes beyond the standard. The team knows in its own way to give added value to the interior. Bouman: "We thought the advice to make the floor a little more playful with a pattern in the middle was a bold choice, but it turned out positively. The floor has become a real eye-catcher!" Janssen: "A standard seat is easily arranged but by placing wheels under a sofa or table or placing a mobile cabinet as a room divider you make an interior extra practical and functional. "In this way, Lensen makes customization the standard and an interior is created in which all the basic needs are consistently implemented and optimized per room and user purpose. Lensen is proud of a great result. Spijkenisse MC is hospitable and patient-friendly furnished, with an eye for people.
